Question 10

Changes to Parent-Taught Certificates (Texas House Bill 1560)

Accepted Answer

Texas House Bill 1560, effective June 1, 2023, introduced several changes to the Parent-Taught Driver Education (PTDE) program. One of the key changes is that all PTDE course providers are now required to obtain a Driver Education Provider license with a parent-taught endorsement from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). This requirement applies to both new and existing providers. Additionally, the bill shifted responsibility for ensuring course compliance to the providers, as TDLR no longer reviews or approves individual driver education courses. However, the process for issuing certificates of completion, like the DE-964 form, remains the same, though providers must ensure they have a method for students to submit proof of course completion. These changes aim to improve the quality and accountability of parent-taught driver education in Texas.

Question 19

Can I Drive Alone with a Permit?

Accepted Answer

No, in Nevada, you cannot drive alone with an instruction permit. Permit holders under the age of 18 must always be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and has been licensed for at least one year. This supervision requirement is part of Nevada's Graduated Driver License (GDL) program to ensure young drivers gain experience under safe conditions. Additionally, before applying for a minor license, you must complete 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice, including 10 hours at night, and keep a log signed by your parent or guardian.

Once you obtain a minor license, you may drive alone, but there are restrictions on transporting passengers under 18 and driving at night until you turn 18.
